The following is a list of Fall 2013 Barnard English courses that require special sign-up. (A list of fall 2013 Barnard Film Studies courses that require special sign-up can be found on the Film Studies website.) The need for special sign-up as well as how to do so is also listed in the Prerequisites section of each course's course description in the Online Catalogue.
Courses that Have Departmental Sign-up Sheets
The following courses are limited in enrollment and require departmental sign-up. Interested students MUST place their name on the sign-up sheets for these courses as well as add the course to their eBear or SSOL. A student simply adding the course to their eBear or SSOL without placing their names on the sheets will NOT ensure their enrollment. Sign-up sheets for these courses will go up on the bulletin boards on the 4th floor of Barnard Hall at 8:30am on Thursday, April 4th. (PLEASE NOTE that some courses that have required departmental sign-up in the past will be L-courses this year—see the L-Course section lower on this page). Please read the following list carefully:
ENGL BC3095: The English Conference
ENGL BC3103: The Art of the Essay (Formerly called Essay Writing)
ENTH BC3129: Early African-American Literature
ENGL BC3133: Early Modern Women Writers
ENGL BC3163: Shakespeare I (please note that this class is only open to juniors and seniors (classes of '15 and '14))
ENGL BC3192: Exile and Estrangement in Global Literature
ENGL BC3193: Critical Writing (please note that this course is only open to Barnard students)
L-Courses
The following courses will be L-courses in fall 2013, and signing up for them is handled by the Registrar directly. Please note that this list includes some courses that have, in the past, required departmental-sign up—but the following courses will NOT have a sign-up sheet this year and will have their enrollment capped online instead. Please read the following list carefully:
ENGL BC3131: The Shadow Knows
ENGL BC3185: Modern British & American Poetry
ENGL BC3195: Modernism
Courses that Require Instructor Permission
The following course is limited in enrollment and requires that a student attend the first day of class to receive instructor permission. Permission will NOT be granted in advance:
ENGL BC3121: Public Speaking
ENGL BC3252: Contemporary Media Theory
Courses that Require a Writing Sample to Apply
A writing sample is required to apply to creative writing courses. As space is limited in creative writing courses, not all students who apply are guaranteed admittance. If a student simply adds the course to their eBear or SSOL without submitting a writing sample will NOT ensure their enrollment. Directions and the required cover sheet for writing samples are available in the English Department Office (417 Barnard Hall) as well as on the Forms section of this website. Writing samples should be submitted to Prof. Szell (her mailbox is in 417 Barnard Hall) by the last day of early Program Filing (Monday, April 22nd for the 2013 Fall semester). Admit lists will be posted on the Admit Lists section of this website as we receive them from the professors (usually around the beginning of the semester):
ENGL BC3105: Fiction & Personal Narrative
ENGL BC3107: Introduction to Fiction Writing
ENGL BC3110: Introduction to Poetry Writing
ENGL BC3113: Playwriting I
ENGL BC3115: Story Writing I
ENGL BC3117 (sections 1 & 2): Fiction Writing
ENGL BC3120: Creative Non-Fiction
Courses Requiring their own Application Process
ENGL BC3101: The Writer's Process
ENGL BC3123: Rhetorical Choices
Courses Run by Lottery
Enrollment in all sections of ENGL BC3159: Colloquium is limited to Barnard junior and senior English Majors. Enrollment in all sections of ENGL BC3997: Senior Seminar is limited to Barnard senior English majors (and Barnard senior film majors for the English/film section). Sign-up for these courses is accomplished through an on-line process. Qualified students may access it through a special tab in eBear during an open access period (noon on Wednesday, March 27th to noon on Wednesday, April 3rd). Results will be posted at 7 p.m. that evening (April 3rd). If you believe that you should be able to access the lottery but are unable to, please check that the Registrar's Office has your major and graduation year listed correctly on eBear. If you still cannot access the lottery, please email lcoolidg@barnard.edu.
Students may also find it helpful to know that a list of fall 2013 Barnard Film Studies courses that have special sign-up procedures can be found on the Film Studies website. Any questions about English or Film Studies sign-ups that are not answered above may be directed to english@barnard.edu.
