Major Advisers

Overview

When they declare, English majors are assigned an adviser from the full-time faculty in the English Department. (This holds for students declaring double and combined majors as well.)

Note that not every major adviser may be accepting new advisees; spots with each major adviser are limited.

Obtaining a Major Adviser

Julissa Acosta will assign you a major adviser when you declare your major. If you would like to have a specific professor as your major adviser, Julissa will let you know whether that professor has availability. If you would prefer to simply be assigned a major adviser, Julissa will assign you a major adviser based on your academic interests and professor availability.

Should your adviser go on leave, you will be reassigned to another professor. This will be determined on the basis of professor availability.

Changing Your Major Adviser

You may change your major adviser at any time.

  1. Fill out a Change of Major/Adviser Form (not a Major Declaration Form) via Slate online.
  2. If you have a specific professor in mind for your new adviser, please write their name down on the form.  Julissa Acosta will let you know whether that professor has availability. If not, Julissa will assign you a new adviser based on your academic interests and professor availability.
